IN THE NEWS

MTA Budget Cuts:

• Approximately 50 local bus routes are targeted in the budget proposal, falling in one of three categories: elimination, cancellation of weekday or weekend service.

• More than 200,000 weekday and weekend riders use those routes, says NYC Transit's 2007 Subway and Bus Ridership Report, the latest available.

• The budget plan also calls for longer gaps between subway trains from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. That would mean longer late-night waits for 40,000 riders on average each weeknight and another 110,000 or so riders on weekends, NYC Transit records show.

• The B-25 is one of the buses targeted in the MTA’s budget proposal to have weekday service cancelled. According to the MTA’s 2007 data the B-25 had an annual ridership of 4 million, and was the 77th most ridden bus line out of 208 local buses. The B-25 is a lifeline for the Central Brooklyn community supplying transportation for millions of riders, providing reliable transportation for our handicap and elderly citizens, and providing traffic to our local community stores. Canceling the weekday and weekend service of the B-25 will force millions of riders underground to the already overcrowded A & C trains with only two handicap access stops in Brooklyn, Franklin and Euclid Ave.

• We now know what can be done when we organize and mobilize our efforts toward our greater good. Let us once again stand in solidarity.
