ABOUT ROBERT E. CORNEGY JR.

Cornegy 2009

"As your City Councilman, I will fight to bring needed resources to Brooklyn's 36th Council District to improve the mental, physical, and financial health of our community. I will work tirelessly to improve the quality of life for our school children, small businesses, homeowners and renters. The 36th Council District, which is made up of Bedford Stuyvesant and Crown Heights has remained a beacon within the Central Brooklyn area for over four decades, and we owe a great deal of thanks to our heroes and leaders that weathered the last 40 years. I will bring the leadership and innovation necessary to guide this Council District into the future. A Council District where all residents, old and young, rich and poor have the means and opportunity to realize his or her dreams and aspirations."

Born September 24th, 1965, Robert E. Cornegy, Jr., is the son of the late Reverend Dr. Robert E. Cornegy, Sr., Pastor of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, and (the late) Ellen Journey Cornegy. Both of his parents were active members of the church for a quarter of a century, and it is their spirit of servant leadership that continues to inspire and guide him. Presently, Rob as he is affectionately known is married to his beautiful wife Michelle, and he is the father of six wonderful children (Robert E Cornegy III, Nicholas Ethan, Nia Imani, Nala Catherine Ellen, Noah and N'Kosi).

Utilizing his impressive 6' 10" stature to earn a full athletic scholarship to St. John's University and the University of Alabama, Rob went on to play basketball professionally overseas for more than ten years. Rob then chose to return home to Bed-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn where he currently lives, to make use of his talents and experiences in order to build a better future for the community he so deeply loves.

As a dedicated and passionate community advocate, Rob recognized the needs of the community and used his own funds to buy and renovate a brownstone where he created "The Cornegy Residence": an 18-bed shelter for men suffering from substance-abuse issues, operating the facility with his private funds.

He did not stop there; Rob has a long history of service implementation and delivery focusing on mental health, substance abuse, and homelessness. He gained valuable hands-on experience by implementing a service-delivery program while working at the Rikers Island Prison Complex; he sits on the boards of many organizations serving such populations; he continues to develop such programs in the wider community; he has a Professional Certificate in the treatment of individuals suffering from substance abuse issues; earned a Bachelors in Organizational Management and holds a Masters degree in Organizational Leadership from Mercy College.

Rob is also an adjunct professor of Marketing at Brooklyn College. Rob is a community organizer, advocate, and political activist with more than 20 years experience working in underserved communities around New York: Bedford-Stuyvesant; East New York; Brownsville; Crown Heights; Ocean Hill; Flatbush; East Flatbush; and the South Bronx. He has also worked in various high-capacity roles ranging from Campaign Manager to Chief of Staff for numerous elected officials in the New York State Assembly and Senate.
